John began to paint landscapes in watercolour at the age of fifteen near to home Solihull, Warwickshire, and in Sussex where he attended Lancing College. In 1956 he was at St Martin’s School of Art, Charing Cross Road and later Birmingham School of Art but left in 1958 to join a firm of architects. He did not find art schools helpful in the study of landscape painting for which he is self taught.
